The Powers That Be
You encounter an old wizard on your path to school one day. He looks like he's old and haggard and rundown and needs a lift, so you give him a ride to Casey's and get him a coffee and breakfast pizza. As a "Tolkien" of appreciation, he offers you a choice of two rings with some special powers. The first ring will grant you the power of flying; as long as you wear this ring, you can fly as high and far and fast as you choose with no physical repercussions. The second ring will grant you the power of supreme intellect; every time you wear this ring you will immediately become one of the smartest, most aware and wise people the world has ever seen. Here's the catch, for every day you wear the ring and draw on its power, you will lose 5 days off your life (so, if you wore the ring for 365 days, you'd lose 5 years off your life).
So, would you choose to take either of the rings? And if so, which ring would you choose, and why?

I myself, would much rather live an exhilarating shorter life than a long simple life. It is because of this that I would take the flying ring. The average American life is around 80 years (according to the World Bank). The average year of retirement for women is around 62 (according to the US census bureau). Let's say if I don't take the ring and live till I am 84, and I retire at 65. Now what? I have 22 more years of back pain, saggy skin, wrinkles, and watching my friends and family die around me. No thanks. I will take the ring travel around and have some fun. Now, maybe I won't where it all the time, or maybe I would. Just depends if I get bored of it, but lets be honest, could you really get tired of flying?
ReplyDeleteIf I was offered both rings, I would take the first ring with the ability of being able to fly. I would take the ring because owning it wouldn’t mean I had to use it. I would carefully plan out when I would use the ring. I would choose the flying one because no one in the world has ever been able to fly on their own will before while there have been many extremely intelligent people. I would be the first person in the world to ever be able to fly. I also think the experience of flying would be incredible. Along with the experience, travel would be so much easier. I wouldn’t have to buy a ticket for a flight or drive a car for long distances.
ReplyDeleteI would take the ring that makes me smarter so that I can cure the diseases of the world. This ring has only small repercussions in the grand scheme of things and that is honestly a small price to pay to cure some not yet cured diseases. This ring will give me intelligence in other areas of my life so I can in vest my money into something that while wearing the ring I think is a good investment. If I am really that smart wearing the ring, then I could make amazing investment and make myself rich. I also think wearing this ring would be a huge temptation so while I am wearing it and know that I shouldn’t anymore I am going to put it in a high level security place and make a scavenger hunt to get to that ring so that scavenger hunt is impossible to do unless you are wearing the ring to prevent myself, and others from using it once I have made the world a better place by finding a cure for many diseases, and using it for myself a bit.

If I had to choose a ring, I’d pick the ring that granted me superior intelligence. With this newfound ability, I could discover scientific phenomenon that no one would’ve ever thought of. I could find creative and innovative ways of making money. Being able to fly would be a cool ability for a hot second, but intelligence and futuristic thinking would grant me long-term living. If I could wear the intelligence ring for one year straight and make as much money as I could, then I would never need to put the ring back on afterward. Even if I lost five years, I’d still have the rest of my life with unlimited free time. There’d be no reason for me to continue working if I made enough money and planned ahead. Therefore, I could spend whatever time I had left doing what I wanted without having to worry about financial issues.

I would choose the to take the rings. I would choose the rings because then I wouldn't need a longer life because I would've gotten to see all the things I would want to see. If I had the choice of the flying ring and the supreme intellect ring I would have to choose the flying ring. I would be able to go and see everything around the world in a shorter amount of time then everyone else. This would make my life easier and I wouldn't even need to live as long because all of things that would've taken me weeks only took me a few days because i could fly everywhere that I went. I would also never get tired of flying where I might get tired of being smart because being able to fly would be so much cooler than being smart all the time.
ReplyDeleteIf I had the choice, I would choose to fly. I would only use the ring in special occasions. For instance, I would use the ring to fly to an exotic place for a day. I would fly to Florida, spend the day with my grandpa and then fly home in time for supper. I could get places so fast if I was late. I could be late for school and get there in an instant. I would only use the ring for emergencies only.

I wouldn’t take any of the rings. I would still help the wizard out but wouldn’t take anything from him. I don’t need these fancy rings. Yes, it would be cool to fly as fast and far as I could. It would also be amazing if I was the smartest person alive, but those things don’t always get you very far in life. Being the smartest could get you a good job, but you could get paid as much as someone who was the dumbest if they know what they are doing in that job. Even if you could fly wherever you still couldn’t take others with you because they can’t fly. I want to spend my life for who I am and my intelligence, and with others for a long time.
ReplyDeleteI would choose the first ring the ability to fly because I wouldn’t have to use it all the time. I wouldn’t use that much because I don’t really want to travel to much. I also love to fly but it’s not worth five days off my life. Also, I don’t really if I was the smartest person in the world. Because then I wouldn’t have any fun I would always think through and not learn from my mistakes.
ReplyDeleteIf I had the option to get either of the rings I probably wouldn't take either because I wouldn't be able to stop using either one. if I took one I would never be able to stop using it and I would die very early. although it was would be nice to be able to fly and go where ever id rather be able to live longer and have more experiences. I wouldn't really care of I got super smart from a ring because that really doesn't matter to me. I feel like if the took the rings at the end of my life I would regret it because it would have been selfish of me to leave my family and friends early when I die all because I wanted to be cool and fly.- Benjamin Fransen
ReplyDeleteIf I had the choice to choose between the two rings, I would choose the ring of supreme intellect. I would choose this ring so I could have questions I've always wondered answered. For example, what happens when you die? Does god really exist? I would only wear this ring for one or two days. I would only wear it for one or two days, because I like my life and would like to carry it out. Also, if I only lost 10 days of my life how important would they be? I would also want to wear this ring because I have no interest whatsoever in flying. Flying does not appeal to me. So all in all, the ring I would choose the ring of intellect.

I would choose the ring that would let me fly as high and far and as fast as I choose. I would choose this ring so when I couldn’t get to places that I needed get to I could just fly. I would only use this ring for emergencies like if one of my friends or family got hurt or if something devastating happened. I would use it to get to them as fast as I could so I could be with them and help them through a hard time. Having that power could be very useful because imagine one of your friends got seriously hurt and you could fly them to the hospital and be there faster than it would ever take an ambulance. You could possibly save their life by cutting off minutes of time it would've taken for the ambulance to get there. I would use it only then because if I live 5 days less then I was going to it would be worth saving someone's whole life or just being there for a friend who's going through horrible things.
